Common Jaguar 2.0 Ingenium Engine Failures
The Jaguar 2.0 Ingenium engine is a common sight at Dieselheads and they are prone to a number of failures. This is most commonly the 204DTD that is found in Jaguar vehicles. Other variants are fitted to Land Rover vehicles.
During inspection there were varying degrees of damage. Some engines are seized and are often not repairable. In these cases a replacement block is required to build up a reconditioned engine (engine surcharges). We have discovered failed turbochargers on both single and twin turbocharged variants. Some of these examples are engines that have not been maintained with regular oil changes. The intake of oil causes the turbocharger to spin, rev up and overload the engines internals. The contamination of soot and particles make their way down and can block oil feed and galleries. This means components lose the lubrication they require (often causing spun bearings). Another area prone to lack of correct lubrication is inside the cylinders, we have found over fuelling fuel injectors have contaminated the space between the piston rings and cylinder walls. Because of the difference in hardness between these two areas, without ideal lubrication the piston rings create a cutting effect and it wears the walls as the piston travels down. Like most engine failures this can cause multiple following failures, as the piston drags the contaminated oil down through many revolutions this can in turn create the oil distribution problems listed above.
The Ingenium engine can also commonly suffer from timing failure. In these cases the timing chain can stretch or snap causing damage to rocker arms, cam carrier, vales and guides.

Jaguar 2.0 Ingenium Engine (204DT)
In 2015 Jaguar Land Rover released their own branded range of modular engines to replace the previous Ford variants like the 2.2 TDi4. These platforms were produced to incorporate both petrol and diesel. The engines were designed for flexibility, the design allows for easier production of versions with fewer or more cylinders. This also meant they have the ability to be mounted longitudinally or transversely for 2 or 4 wheel drive applications.
The first diesel Ingenium engines used were fitted to the Jaguar XF, Jaguar XE and Jaguar F-Pace. This was at first a single turbocharged variant known as the 204DTD & 204DTH. In 2017 the platform was also fitted to the same vehicles plus the Jaguar E-Pace, this variant was twin turbocharged. Both these variants have their own iterations each developing different power outputs and can be found mounted differently to suit the application, these commonly adopt the 204DTA engine.
