2.7 TDV6 – AJD-V6 LION V6 (DIESEL)
2004 +

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 3 (L319), RANGE ROVER SPORT (L320), CITROËN C5, CITROËN C6, JAGUAR S-TYPE, JAGUAR XF, JAGUAR XJ, PEUGEOT 407, PEUGEOT 607

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
Broken crankshaft – upon inspection the crankshaft of this engine by design incorporates weak spots in the area between the rod bearing journals and counterweights. Over a long period of a high stress or aggressive driving style these points on the crankshaft fail. This seems to still be the case on a vehicle with the correct maintenance history. A related issue with the lion v6 is spun main and big end bearings. Oil starvation can be another less common cause for engine malfunction, this failure can occur with the engine oil pump and surrounding galleries as well as turbochargers. Issues resulting from listed failures include: snapped camshaft chains, damage to fuel injectors, heat damaged and melted pistons.

3.0 TDV6 SDV6 – AJD-V6 LION V6 (DIESEL EURO 5)

2010 – 2015

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT L320 & L494, JAGUAR XF, JAGUAR XJ, LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4 L319

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
Like the above 2.7 tdv6 the 3.0 tdv6 suffers from the same crankshaft issues and resulting damage, although the oil pump, timing belt tensioner and surrounding oil galleries have been improved, even so this does not mean the issue is less common.

3.0 TDV6 SDV6 – AJD-V6 LION V6 (DIESEL EURO 6)

2016 – PRESENT

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER SPORT L494, JAGUAR XF, LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4 L319 & 5 L462

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
Still suffering from crankshaft failure like previous versions of this engine, the euro 6 (new shape) 3.0 diesel engine has a water cooled turbocharger with an oil on demand system. Being fitted in newer models of land rover range rover means that the repair procedure is very different as the body and chassis are integral meaning they cannot be split.

3.6 TDV8 – LION V8 (DIESEL)
2007 – 2010

LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER VOGUE L322, RANGE ROVER SPORT L320

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
Upon inspection the main cause of engine failure for the 3.6 tdv8 originates from the turbochargers. A breach occurs within the oil system meaning oil enters the engine intake. The severity of the relating damage varies depending on when the issue was identified. Another issue with the 3.6 is caused by corrosion on the valve stems which in turn creates a poor seal.

4.4 SDV8 TDV8 (DIESEL)

2012 – PRESENT

RANGE ROVER L405, RANGE ROVER SPORT L494

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
The 4.4 sdv8 suffers from a similar turbocharger system malfunction like the 3.6 tdv8, meaning oil is sucked through the intake causing engine failure. The valvetrain seems to use improved materials and does not suffer with the corrosion issue.

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
Crankshaft failure – loss of oil pressure and lubrication causing spun bearings and can seize. Inclusive damage – inspection shows valve stems are a softer/weaker material and incur damage from the rocker arms.

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
During inspection we have found that the n47 engine of all forms seem to suffer from mainly timing issues. The timing chain and plastic guides can snap causing engine failure, many cases have shown spun big end and main bearings and seized engines. Other less common problems include overheating due to a cracked engine block and a broken crankshaft, we suspect these issues are more common in engines that have not been maintained correctly or have ignored the service schedule. On multiple versions of the n47 engine with a timing chain it has been found that the timing chain guide can weaken and wear over time, these fragments make their way to the sump and can in turn block the oil pipe to oil pump causing oil starvation – lack of oil to the oil pump will cause failures to other parts that require lubrication I.E. Turbochargers.

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
By reports the BMW n57 (6 cylinder) engine has the same general problems as the n47 (4 cylinder) above with it’s timing. Among the shared common issues we have also seen over-fuelling injectors causing melted pistons.

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
During inspection it is interesting to see wear and failure of many internal parts, this shows us that the engines from factory may produce too much power for the overall strength of the materials used and cannot sustain operation for a lifetime with the following – an aggressive driving style, long and often periods of maximum power output, this usually results in spun big end and main bearings. Other issues are caused by poor maintenance and a lack of servicing – timing failures usually occur because the timing belt itself snaps causing engine failure.

COMMON ENGINE FAILURES
Similar to the ea189 and ea288 2.0 tdi engines the 3.0 tdi shows weak internals and failures related to poor maintenance and a lack of servicing, the main difference is a timing chain. It is common for the timing chain to snap, if not correctly maintained this will cause major engine failure.
